Web browsing (and all Inet access) is going be slow from mars (it's 1.5s latency on the moon; 10-20min. on Mars).
web and other tcp/ip proxies inbetween along the distance would shorten this latency.
those would enter into solar orbits, transferring control from one subset to another based on distance/latency constraints.
processing times of distributed proxies should be marginal relative to the latency of 10 to 20 minutes.
That is, until quantum computing (if ever) enables instantaneous information processing by tele- qubit entanglement.
An alternative is a framework to mirror web services, applications and databases for real-time interactivity, removing the need for such roaming proxies.
In effect, instead of hosting a web application on earth only, one would host a mirror of it on the remote location (say Mars) with transactions updated/synced in batch at the original (or main) servers back on earth.
That or a common framework to handle all syncing back and forth amon mirrors - taking it off the software providers' hands - and providing as an infrastructural service - just like tcp/ip itself.
